Our Journey

Growth Starts Here

I started Stepping Stones Mentoring because I have seen how many children struggle to find
the support they need within traditional school environments. For some young people, school
can feel overwhelming, isolating, or simply not the right setting for them to thrive. This is
especially true for children who experience school refusal, those who are home educated, or
those who find it difficult to fit into the expectations of a busy classroom.

Every child deserves the opportunity to feel confident, capable, and included. Unfortunately,
many children who struggle in school settings can begin to lose belief in themselves, withdraw
socially, or feel disconnected from learning and physical activity.

Stepping Stones Mentoring aims to provide children with the support, encouragement and
space they need to grow, helping them take small but meaningful steps towards a more
confident and positive future.

Stepping Stones Mentoring was created to provide a safe, supportive and encouraging
environment where children can rebuild confidence at their own pace.
Sport and physical activity are at the heart of this approach. Movement, games and teamwork
can break down barriers that conversation alone often cannot. Through sport, children can learn
how to communicate, cooperate, take positive risks and experience success in a way that feels
natural and enjoyable.

Sessions focus not only on physical activity but also on building important life skills such as
resilience, teamwork, self-belief and emotional wellbeing. By creating positive experiences,
children can begin to rediscover their strengths, form friendships and develop the confidence to
face new challenges.

Our Approach

What Makes Us Different.

My mentoring approach is built on one simple but powerful foundation: trust. Before any
real progress can happen, a child needs to feel safe, understood and respected. Building
a positive and healthy relationship is always the first step. This takes time, patience and
consistency, but once that trust is established, children begin to open up, engage and
believe that change is possible.

I believe in meeting children exactly where they are. Rather than expecting them to immediately
change or overcome their challenges, I work alongside them, taking small and manageable
steps forward together. Every child moves at their own pace, and those small successes along
the way help build a sense of achievement and self-belief.

A key part of my approach is helping children recognise and understand their emotions and
behaviours. Together we begin to identify early warning signs that may lead to frustration,
anxiety or overwhelm. By recognising these signals early, we can develop practical strategies
that help children regulate their emotions and respond in healthier ways.

These strategies might include movement, breathing techniques, structured activities, or simple
coping tools that give children a sense of control in difficult moments. Over time, they begin to
understand themselves better and feel more confident in managing challenges.

Sport and physical activity play an important role in this process. Through games, challenges
and teamwork, children can practise communication, problem-solving and resilience in a natural
and enjoyable way. It allows them to experience success, work through setbacks and develop
confidence without the pressure of a traditional classroom setting.
As these small steps begin to build, children start to realise that they are capable of more than
they once believed. Their confidence grows, they become more willing to try new things, and
their resilience strengthens.
